Dear Sir/Madam

I would like to request some help as to which US B-Schools I should realistically target with my profile and GMAT score. I will just mention my profile in concise and any help that I get will be deeply appreciated as it will help me decide the course of my future and plan my applications wisely

PROFILE:

GMAT: 760 ( AWA 5)

Xth Standard Boards : 90% marks

XIIth Standard Boards : 91 % marks

I studied in a centralised INDIAN board and only top 4-5% students secured 90% marks

UNDERGRAD:

NIT DURGAPUR (ELECTRICAL ENGINEER)

CGPA: 7.42/10 ( topper 8.9/10), my GPA will place me in the top 30% of the class
NIT's are central government engineering colleges and widely considered to be the TIER-II technical institutions in INDIA preceded only by the IIT's

WORK-EX:

42 months as EXECUTIVE ENGINEER at POWER GRID CORPORATION OF INDIA LIMITED. POWER GRID is a premier INDIAN public sector utility and has been awarded "NAVRATNA" status by the GOVT which is awarded to only a chosen few public sector companies. It is the central power transmission utility in the country and the 3rd largest high voltage transmission utility in the world considering circuit kilometres of high voltage lines. During my tenure I have been involved in the construction of 400 KV transmission lines, testing and commissioning of 400 KV transformers and substation equipment. Further I have involved in the CSR( corporate social responsibility) initiatives of our office.

EXTRA CURRICULARS: Decent , considering of sports and music related achievements at undergrad level. Nothing extraordinary

My goals post MBA involve remaining in the POWER INDUSTRY in a higher managerial role as my work experience is deeply related and this will hold me in good stead in the future.

I would be deeply grateful if I am guided as to which US B Schools should I target. Personally I am very highly interested in applying to Mccombs and DARDEN, are these wise choices?

Thanking You in advance

Supratim

Supratim,

Thanks for your post.

I think McCombs and Darden are excellent "target" schools for your profile. Being in Texas, McCombs should offer great recruiting opportunities in the power / energy industry. I generally suggest applying to 4-5 schools, so I recommend adding 1-2 "reach" schools such as Booth, Kellogg, and/or Tuck and another "target" school such as Carnegie Mellon, Emory, or Cornell to your list.

For your work experience, it will be important to demonstrate career progression (through titles, compensation, responsibilities) and leadership (project management or thought leadership in the sense of originating new ideas and initiatives).

Good luck!

Heidi

Ma'm,

Thank you very much.

Your post has filled me with a new sense of confidence. Previously I was thinking that Mccombs itself would be a reach school for my profile, however now I guess I can aim a little higher. Though I still believe that my profile is not good enough for Booth/ Kellogg , however now I have the confidence to take a shot.

Ma'm I would also like to know recommendations would be best if obtained from which source, my bosses at work, my college professors or any other source that you would suggest.
Thanking you again

With Regards,

Supratim
