Maximizing your GMAT Prep Time

by abhatt_mgr » Thu Sep 18, 2008 2:27 am
Please Suggest for maximizing the prep time. I am working as International Territory Sales Manager and most of the time in travelling. I had had plan for taking GMAT in Sept 3rd week but due to lack of prep I have already postponed it to 2nd week of Nov, 08.
My problem is I do not have a continuous 2 to 3 hrs daily prep time. This has really affected my mock test taking. My professional limitations are, I start my job early in the morning sometime by 7.30 AM and continue to work till night 10.00 PM. Mostly my weekends are even busier than weekdays. I am in Industrial Selling B2B function where accessibility and spending time with key customers is vital for relationship building and sales lead. Many times I need to spend till 2.00 AM with some of the key clients during long hrs dinners, mostly on weekends.
I am worried and helpless with this kind of lifestyle that I will never be able to prepare for GMAT. Please anybody can suggest me that how can I maximize my 7 to 10 hrs weekly preparation and achieve a good score.

In your case I would suggest the following:

a) For prep, give whatever time you have, even if its 15 min waiting for a client it will make a difference. Try to use the time in your travel, give yourself a 15 min prep in the morning and evening. Initially it will be diff but with practice you can tune your mind to do that. (I have done it in the past, so I can make this statement :D ). Good thing in GMAT is you can do something in 15 min since the concepts are not very complex to digest and the questions have multiple choices to pick answers from

b) For practice tests, you need to give yourself an hour atleast without a break, more the better though. Instead of taking full length tests, you could take small timed tests to see your performance. Atleast take 2 gmat prep tests in the actual exam conditions. This will help you gauge where you stand. I would suggest take one in the middle of prep and take one towards the end.
Wish you good luck

Dear Prasanna
Many thanks for your reply and kind suggestions. I got little bit stressed after going through the forums, which I have started just couple of days ago. When I see people are devoting 2 to 3 hrs a day for at least 2 month's prep I become stressed. Further as per the pattern I understand to achieve 700+ one must complete 1000 Series. Specially a person like me who is weaker in SC and RC. I am from Enginneering background and I do not face any trouble with PS + DS and CR. The Accuracy is almost + 98% and @1.6 min/Q.
My critical areas are SC and RC. Presently, I am working on OG10 SC and trying to solve 1000 SC. I have taken these items in my Pocket PC and whenever I find time I try it even in 15 to 20 min waiting time.
But, it is a very slow process and I can finish hardly 12 to 15 Qs/day. As you can see that at this rate the 1000 series is becoming monstrous.
Please suggest me with a kind of material to go through that may deliver quick results. Recently, I have finished MGMAT SC and Review both are very usefull for SC and I have got generated many insights.

Hi

I think you have already made good progress in the prep. Get rid of the misconception that you need to complete 1000 Series to score well. I got a 740 with only OG (all three) and MGMAT (SC and tests). There are people who cross 750 with only OGs. Much depends on your potential.

In your case I would suggest that you need to first find where you stand. Find time and take a full length test (pref gmat prep that can be downloaded from mba.com) If you are running short of time, you can ignore the AWA and get on with Quant section. See where you stand vis a vis your target score and then lets decide where to focus your energies on. You are better of concentrating on areas that need improvement than taking additional prep material. You need to find the areas where your efforts will give the maximum return in terms of score :D
Wish you good luck

Another thing which I did during my prep- whenever I got couple of min free, I used to check this forum. You will be exposed to diff questions that will help strengthen your knowledge. I hope you have access to internet through a PDA device.
Wish you good luck
