Hello Friends,

I am new on "beat the gmat". I am currently residing in New Delhi, India. I am 24 years old. I am a graduate in Chemical Engineering. I have done both Btech and Mtech in Chemical Engineering through a 5 year course. I graduated from Indian Institute of Technology in 2009 and joined Indian Oil Research and Development Center. I have been working there since august 2009. My GPA is 3.95 out of 5. My current job is in the petroleum sector. I have 3 questions.

1) Since my job profile is R&D. How is it going to affect my prospects when I apply for Gmat. Is a changeover required in the job?
2) I do not know the procedure and the timeline/ deadlines for applying for GMAT. When would it be right for me to give GMAT and send out applications. (I have "heard" that 2 years work ex is good before applying is this right?). How many Recommendations etc are required.
3) What effects if any would my writing CFA level 1 have on my application to a B School in the States?

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. To answer your questions:

1) No. However, you should try through your essays, job descriptions in the application form, and resume, to portray interface with the business side and understanding of how the R&D fits in the overall business picture.

2) There is no one right time to take the GMAT. If you are scoring well on practice tests, you might take it anytime to get it behind you and focus on the application process. Otherwise take it as soon as you can likely achieve your best score, again, so that you can move on to the applications without worrying about it. At latest, take it at a time when you can report the score on the applications and it is official. Two years of work experience is on the low side but would be acceptable if it's exceptional. Number of recommendations varies by school, with the average being two.

3) The CFA level 1 would help - it would support and enhance your applications though would not likely be a deciding factor. Of course, it depends on your goals - it should be relevant to your goals.
