One Year MBA...Need help!!!

by harjindermall » Sat Feb 27, 2010 8:46 am
Hi guys,

I need some help in regards to my situation...

I'm from Montreal, Canada and have a Bachelor in Economics with a minor in Business Studies. I worked at Computershare Trust Company of Canada for 2 years in their Corporate Actions Department while I was in Montreal. I relocated to NYC in 2006 and worked at Pershing in their Alternative Investments Department for about 3 years. I am fluent in French, English and Punjabi.

Recently, I relocated to Chicago. I'm currently not working and thought that it would be a great idea to go back to school a get a MBA. Since, I did the core courses already, I was thinking of going for the 1Y MBA @ Kellogg. I'm also thinking of staying the same field.

For my situation, is better that I do the 1Y MBA or the 2Y MBA? What are your thoughts?

Thank you,

Harjinder

I think you are very much a suitable candidate for a 1yr MBA!

You have a degree is Business, want to stay in the same field and have relevant work experience. There can't be a better profile for a 1Yr MBA candidate!

All the best.

I agree with hk. If you are planning to stay in the same field post-MBA, then it would make sense for you to enter a 1-yr MBA program.

I know you mentioned Kellogg, but what other 1-yr programs are you looking into?

HK: Thank you very much for your insight. I really appreciate it!

dmateer25: I considered Kellogg because it's a top school. I'm also looking into Kellstadt Graduate School of Business (DePaul University) & Keller Graduate School of Management (DeVry University) which also offer the 1Y MBA program.

Do you know if there are any other schools I should be looking into? Also, would it be a big career change if I was to go in consulting?

Here are a couple other 1-year MBA programs to consider:

Cornell
Emory
Notre Dame

I guess it depends on what type of consulting you plan on doing? Strategy consulting? If so, how different is that from what you are doing currently? If it is significantly different, you may benefit from the 2-year program so you can get exposure to more areas through electives.

Any of them in Chicago? I did some research and I'm not sure if they campuses in here.

What do you think about Kellstadt Graduate School of Business (DePaul University) & Keller Graduate School of Management (DeVry University)?

I'm looking to get into Management Consulting. Ideally, I'd like to work for McKinsey. My previous work experience centers more around operations work. Since the core courses will be waived, I was thinking of taking electives that would be useful for a consulting job.

No, none of those schools are in Chicago.

Cornell is in Ithica, NY
Emory is in Atlanta, GA
Notre Dame is in South Bend, IN

Not sure about those two schools, but Keller is definitely not AACSB accredited. I would be sure you go to a AACSB accredited school. Along with that, management consulting is very competitive at the top firms (especially McKinsey). You will want to go to one of the top b-schools to try and get a position with a company such as McKinsey.

Kellogg is a fabulous school and its 1yr program is very reputed. I'm not sure about the other schools. These schools are not very popular and I'm not sure whether they are accredited. To put it in another way, I would not recommend them to my friend for all the effort he might be putting into them.

As dmateer25 pointed Cornell, Emory and ND have a reputed 1yr program, apart from Kellogg. I would also add Ivey, Canada to the list of 1 year programs. But if you are particular about the location, I'm not very sure about other schools.

The best thing for me to do would be to attend Kellogg. I'm pretty particular about location. Eventually, I'd like to move back to Montreal, so by having a MBA from a top school would definitely gives me an advantage in my job search.

Thanks a lot for your recommendations! :)

Hi folks,

I am also looking to apply for 1 year Kellogg program.

I have done Bachelors in IT from India and thereafter MBA(Marketing) from MDI-Gurgaon; a tier 1 indian b-school.

I have been working for last 4 years in TCS[leading IT company] for its innovation go-to-market strategy and branding.

My GMAT score is 700. I'd like to apply for 2011 class. I wish to get into go-to-market strategy consulting field.

My queries are:
1/ At present I am only considering kellogg for 1 yr program. I'd appreciate if you could share other good institutes for marketing domain which offer 1 yr programs.

2/ Selection prospects.

3/ Should I retake GMAT if i could get 730 in next attempt?

Many Thanks,
Istuti
