Evaluation - and my dilemma

by dyaf96 » Thu Mar 29, 2012 8:56 am
Hi,

I have considered applying to the NYU PT Program. I'm also interested in some of the Top-25 range FT programs but have lingering doubts. These doubts are a product of my underwhelming 2.4 undergraduate GPA. I graduated in 2006 with a degree in Business Economics from a mid-tier public university. Although I've yet to take the GMAT, my test date is approaching and I've consistently scored in the ~650-670 range on practice CATS. The rest of my profile is as follows:

- Work exp - 5 years as an arbitrage analyst at a small consulting firm with many promotions to AVP. Leadership responsibilities include training and supervision of staff.
- Extra curricular activities include varied local volunteer work and participation in a citywide young professionals business club.
- I'm currently taking classes as a non-matriculated student at a mid tier PT MBA program (though not interested in finishing a degree at this school) and anticipate receiving minimum B+ grades.

I know I'm already at a great disadvantage with my undergraduate GPA but if I can score a 670+ GMAT, would applying to top 25 FT programs be worth consideration? Is my profile even competitive enough for NYU PT and other NYC area PT programs?

For PT programs, you should certainly be competitive, esp. if you work for a known firm, and have some support from your job. Now, although a 2.5 GPA is certainly no great shakes, its no "app killer" either. If you get a 690 or plus (maybe even a 670.... depends on other things)... you could certainly apply to some Top 25 programs.. but a lot will depend of course on how the school perceives your professional experience and success up until now, as well as how that fits into your goals... So, that's something to look deeper into. But it's important to know that a 2.5 doesn't necessarily disqualify you (except for the maybe the top 5 programs), but if you can make up for it by kicking the heck out of the GMAT, it can really help...
