by hja379 » Sun Feb 13, 2011 2:56 pm
Scientists have recently discovered what could be the
largest and oldest living organism on Earth, a giant
fungus that is an interwoven filigree of mushrooms and
rootlike tentacles spawned by a single fertilized spore
some 10,000 years ago and extending for more than
30 acres in the soil of a Michigan forest.

(A) extending
(B) extends
(C) extended
(D) it extended
(E) is extending

OA A

This is Q42 in OG12 and tests parallelism. I could not understand the explanation offered. How is a past participle be parallel to present participle? I thought that for the elements tested to be in parallel, they would need to be in the same form.

I find it useful to think of them as the active (ing) and passive participles, and they should be used in accordance with their intended meaning.

For example:

The panda bear resembled a teddy bear (active voice) and has been studied extensively (passive voice) . It attracts tourists from all over the world.
