Hi Ayushiiitm,

I also picked E for this one, but I don't see anything wrong with either D or E.

The thread title "RE: OG 12 question" suggests that this is an OG 12 question. Is it? (can you ID the question #?). I think D & E are both grammatically right; I would only worry about having to split them if this were an actual official Q.

By the way I think you forgot to underline "depicting" in your original post

I am not seeing any error with B also.

B, D ,and E all are looking correct.
Please check the problem again.

Here is how I approached this.

The author wants to say that Da Vinci produced a series of masterpieces that depicted either religious themes, expressions, or a combination of both

A) Leonardo Da Vinci , who was a great painter and architect, produced a series of masterpieces both

Here the placement of both indicates that he only made two series.

B) Leonardo Da Vinci, the great painter and architect, produced a series of masterpieces that depcited both
E) Great painter and architect Leonardo Da Vinci produced a series of masterpieces depicting both

Here both indicates his masterpieces contain only religious themes and expressions

That leaves us with C & D. C contains no verb in the main clause as who produced now describes Da Vinci. The sentence would now read:
.
C) Great Painter and architect Leonardo Da Vinci,...yet in many ways he stood apart

That leaves D.

D) Great painter and architect Leonardo Da Vinci produced a series of masterpieces that depicted

The sentence has a verb and I believe conveys the actual meaning that he produced masterpieces that contained themes and/or expressions

Hi Ayush,

I'm sure you must have made your way down to options 'D' & 'E', both of which are grammatically correct, but of these options I would choose 'E', for the reasons that:

1. there has to be only one answer correct. :)

2. the option 'E' supports the author's intent well. Usage of "both" pictures the weight with which author puts the statement, which is well supported by the usage of "yet in", heading the subordinate clause.

Hope the explanation helps! Please share the answer.

P.S. : PLease consider it valid only if "depicted" too in underlined in the original sentence.

I just checked OG-12
This question looks a paralyzed version on OG-12,SC-88.

See the real problem :

(OA is D there and it is clear)

In this question, I selected 'B' but, in the "original" question (OG-12,SC-88), I selected 'D'.
I'll go out on a limb and assert that the 'Da Vinci' question doesn't entirely parallel the 'Thelonious Monk' question.

How do we decide between that vs -ing form
In my opinion it has to be D because both is not needed here.

How do we decide between that vs -ing form
I am sharing a trick.

If we use article (a,an,the) before appositives, we need to use comma.
Example:
A pianist and a lyricist, James produced a lots of good songs.
=> Article + Appositive

If we use adjective as appositive, we need to use comma.

example:
Creative and talented writer, Rabindra Nath Tagore wrote the Gitanjoly.
=> Creative and talented-> adjective.

If we use just noun as appositive, we need not use comma.

Example:

Pianist and lyricist James produced good songs.

===> religious themes and expressions of people---> X and Y of people-> A single thing.

So, we need not use BOTH.

Clearly D is the answer.
