Quant Pacing Help--1 month to go!

by ssheridan12 » Fri Aug 05, 2011 11:23 am
I'm taking my test on September 9th.

I've taken the online Kaplan GMAT course and have completed 3 automated CATS through them.
Diag: 530 (Q31, V58) (Didn't answer the final 7 questions of the Quant, ran out of time)
Cat 1: 530 (Q34, V53)
Cat 3: 570 (Q34, V74)

I took the GMAT Practice Test 1 today and scored a 600. The Q33 and V40.

I find that I typically end up with anywhere from 7-11 questions on the Quant section with 10-12 minutes to go. Therefore, I end up guessing on a large number of the remaining questions.

I'm shooting for a 650 on the GMAT.

My verbal scores seem pretty decent but I don't seem to be improving in math. Should I continue with practice CATs to improve pacing or go back to doing practice math problems to build up more fundamentals.

I'd appreciate any advice.

Clarification, I'd appreciate any helpful advice not smartass comments. Thanks! I'm leaving myself time for one additional test so the timing of my first test is firm.

Hi,
I don't think tests will improve your speed. Test mode can even drive you crazy as the timer clicks. I believe you need to strengthen your math basics first and then practice problems on specific topics(topics which you feel you are lagging behind). Then try timing your practice sessions and adopt your own strategies as to when you should guess(intelligent guess or whatever people call it) and move on. In due course of time, you will become more confident and then you can try those strategies in your practice tests. You can even refer Quant forums here to know if there are any easier ways of solving certain type of problems.
Btw, your Verbal scores are awesome. But, I don't understand 58,53,74. Raw scores? Any typos?
Good Luck!
Cheers!

@Frankenstein, the 58 and 53 are the percentiles that Kaplan gave me as my verbal score on the CATS I took. The V74 was the percentile from the GMAT Prep test. I tend to agree with your advice to go back to fundamentals...why stress out on timing if I don't have the fundamentals down solid. Thanks for your help.

@mundasingh123---Maybe I jumped the gun...when I read your reply it came across as a smarty comment. I'll try to lighten up!
