Hi there,

I was wondering if any professionals could take a look at my profile and provide some feedback. I am interested in pursuing a full time MBA program.

Background: 34 yrs old, Indian male.

Undergraduate Degree: B. Tech. - Industrial Engineering, GPA-3.80/4.00

Graduate Degree: M.S. - Industrial Technology, GPA 4.00/4.00 (Dean's medal nominee, Graduate student of the year Award)

GMAT: 670 (Q45, V38), AWA : 5.0

Work Experience: 11 yrs in Manufacturing/Operations.
-I worked in India with an automotive giant for 3 yrs in the capacities of Industrial Engineer and Quality Engineer. I did not lead any teams there. Most of the projects involved individual efforts, however I did interact extensively with all levels of management, shop floor workers and customers.

-I have been working with a manufacturing company here in United States from last 8 years. For first 3 years, I worked as an Industrial Engineer and from last 5 years, I have been working as a Production Supervisor, leading a team of 24 associates. I have solid accomplishments at both jobs.

Extra-Curricular:
-I have been a sportsman all my life. I competed multiple times at National Level Gymnastics championships, got a green belt in Judo and have been playing volleyball since college. My volleyball team participates in annual charity fundraiser.

-Have been instrumental in fund raising efforts for a non profit since its inception. This non profit runs a shelter for orphan children in India.

I understand my age could be an issue for a full time program and my GMAT score could be an issue for top schools. However, I am interested in finding out US schools that could be within my reach with my given profile and if there is anything I could do to improve my profile at this point.

drajjo,

If you are dead-set on a full-time MBA rather than an executive MBA or part-time MBA then you may have a chance at some of the following schools, all of which are quality programs: Washington U., Ohio State, UNC Kenan-Flagler, Indiana, Emory, Iowa, Maryland, SMU Cox, Wisconsin, Brigham Young, UC Irvine, Washington (Foster), and Vanderbilt. I recommend applying to as many schools as possible given your negatives to spread your risk. In terms of what you can do now, I'm not clear how much leadership per se you have outside of work recently but you might try to ramp that up through a high-impact leadership role starting now.

Of course, if you could raise that GMAT score 30 points it would give them one less negative to ponder.

drajjo,

If you think you can get a better GMAT, why let this number spoil your chances. Your rest of the profile looks solid for many top 20 schools as well. However, it will be critical for you to explain Why is this the right time for you to do MBA. You have a very good profile, however, the real challenge for you will be to execute it to make sure that the strength of your profile come across your application.

If you are not interested in Exec/Part Time MBA, look out for Accelerated/1 year MBA programs which many a times requires a masters degree. These program also have students with more work exp than regular 2 year MBA (but less than an Exec one!) Also, schools in Europe are usually 1 year in length and have higher average work experience in the class.
