Profile Evaluation

by dmateer25 » Wed Oct 15, 2008 12:30 pm
Let me start by saying I don’t plan to attend B-school until 2011. I want to get started early and have begun my GMAT preparation.

It never hurts to start early!

Profile:

Small private school in Western Pennsylvania
BSBA with concentration in Management (2008)
GPA 3.96

Awards:
Numerous honor societies, voted top Management student by faculty and president of the University

Extracurricular activities:
This is an area I need to improve. I worked all 4 years while in school (3 years at a family owned business and 1 in a large corporation). Consequently, I didn’t have many extracurricular activities.

I have a few years till I plan to start applying to schools. I have a few coaching and mentoring opportunities I plan to pursue.

Work Experience:
1 year as Procurement Coordinator.
Negotiated savings of 20% on indirect material and service contracts valued over $1.5 million.

Starting January, I will be working in the Treasury department of a large Global 500 company as a Financial Analyst.

I should have 3.5 – 4 years experience when I plan to apply to b-schools and a number of promotions in this time.

My questions:
How do I need to perform on the GMAT to be admitted to a top 25 school?

Any advice on what I should do to improve my profile now while I have time?

Thanks for any comments/advice!

Dear dmateer25,

Kudos to you on thinking about your application and profile this far in advance. You have laid the foundation so far, so now it is time to build on that foundation. I encourage you to seek out opportunities at work to grow your skill set and take on greater responsibility; it will be important for you to show career progress between now and the time you apply to school.

In terms of a GMAT, anything that starts with a 7 puts you in the best position. Generally speaking, you want to be in the mid-80% range of the schools you target and ideally above the average. For the top 25, this will usually be over 650.

Lastly, you do want to have community involvement between now and business school that you can discuss in your applications. Leadership roles in community activities are viewed favorably and can help demonstrate your leadership skills if you do not have as much opportunity in your professional experience.

Best of luck,
Lisa

Lisa,

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post!

I am shooting for a GMAT score between 670-720.

I feel if I score in that range and add some community involvement leadership to my profile, I will have a good shot at a top 25.

Lisa,

Would you be able to recommend any schools I should start to look at based on the information below.

I am interested in pursuing in a career in Finance or Consulting after I obtain my MBA.

I am looking to attend a school that is fairly small and not in an overly populated area.

I was thinking Tepper (I live outside of Pittsburgh now), Tuck, and I'm not sure what other schools would be a good fit.
