Profile evaluation

by beatthegmat » Thu Jul 19, 2007 1:17 pm
Posting for MBAnowornever:

I am in the process of identifying business schools that I will apply to, but need assistance in coming up with a list of schools that is diverse in selectivity, but at the same, is in line with my career aspirations and academic interests. I am interested in pursuing a career in management consulting/business development, most likely in the media/entertainment field, and would like to focus on schools that cater to these particular areas.

Here is my list so far: Harvard Northwestern Columbia Berkeley UCLA NYU Cornell

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND I graduated cum laude from an Ivy League undergraduate institution in 2004 with a major in economics, a minor in political science, an overall GPA of 3.4, and a major GPA of 3.6.

WORK EXPERIENCE (3 years) I currently work in the strategic planning group of a top-ranked global investment bank (IB) where our primary stakeholders are the IB co-heads, the IB CFO, and various product CFO’s. I entered the firm as part of a rotational training program, and after completing three rotations in completely different parts of the bank, I placed in my current team. I have had the chance to produce several high-profile management presentations and strategy decks and cultivate strong relationships with a range of people in my line of business (many of whom hold MBAs from top institutions whom I expect to receive glowing recommendations from). After a year, I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to be promoted to associate, given my superior performance.

LEADERSHIP Aside from my work experience, my participation in extra-curricular activities in college provided me with substantial opportunities to display leadership. I founded a cultural performing arts group and was voted president. Under my leadership, I established an annual charity event that raised $29K in two years for select charities.

GMAT I scored a 650 (67th percentile quant, 88th percentile verbal) on my GMAT a month ago, and am planning to retake it to improve my score. I am shooting for a 700, but I would be happy with a 680/690 (90th percentile). The GMAT is my primary area of concern, and I am worried that it could possibly detract from the rest of my application. Please let me know your opinion with respect to this “weakness.”

Hi MBAnowornever,

Jobs in M&E strategy are most often acquired through personal networking, so the most important part of your MBA program evaluation is looking at the alumni network, and perhaps the network that your professors and classmates may have. Of your list, Columbia, NYC and UCLA all have programs specifically for M&E, as well as a good M&E community. I would definitely suggest starting to network with current students at the schools you are interested in to see what M&E recruiting is like there.

As for weaknesses, aside from improving your GMAT, it would be useful to add more recent volunteer activities to your profile. Your work experience and college activities sound good.

Good luck!

Amy, I appreciate your feedback. I definitely have participated in and organized many volunteer-type events in the past few years, so I will be sure to highlight these points, as well.

Do you think that, given my profile, I have a decent shot at these schools? And, do you think it makes sense for me to apply all 7 of them? I'm just very keen on attending business school next fall and am trying to ensure that I definitely get into at least one school. I am very interested in attending a school with the M&E focus, as well as a relevent alumni network, but at the same time, my primary aspiration is to obtain a strong academic foundation in strategy/management (Harvard, Northwestern, Berkeley). Ideally, upon obtaining my MBA, I would like to join a reputable consulting firm and work for different companies in M&E, build experience in the field and establish a strong network, and subsequently, join a biz dev or strategic planning group, or assume another type of management position, in an M&E firm as a result of my networking efforts and/or client connections.

Hi MBANowOrNever,

The process depends on quite a few factors, including the way you present yourself in essays and interviews. Assuming that you do improve your GMAT and submit a stellar application I think you have a chance.

I would focus on the GMAT right now to improve your overall academic profile. Your GPA is fine, but combined with a low GMAT (650 is fairly low for a top 10 school) your academic profile may be a weakness. In terms of application strategy, make sure you highlight what is unique and interesting about you, given your fairly standard background and goals. You'll be looking for differentiation.

Good luck!

Hi Amy,

I just wanted to let you know that I just retook the GMAT and improved my GMAT score from 650 to 690. Hopefully, this new score makes my academic record appear stronger - do you think it's worth giving the exam another shot? Again, to refresh your memory, I'm interested in applying to the following schools: Harvard, Northwestern, Columbia, NYU, Berkeley, UCLA, and Cornell. I want to make sure I present a sufficiently strong profile that warrants my applying to the aforementioned schools.

Please let me know your feedback. Many thanks for your help so far.

Hi MBANowOrNever,

A 690 is a good score, and shouldn't hold you back. Unless you think you can increase it substantially with little extra studying, it's probably worth focusing on the essays and other areas of your application at this point.

Good luck!
