350 in my Gmat prep test 1

by goodkarthik » Thu Mar 17, 2011 6:30 pm
Dear All,

I am following the 60 day guide of GMAT from beat the gmat I ordered all the books needed for that plan and got it last week. I have taken my first diagnostic test and found that I have scored 350 in my first test. Quants = 27 and Verbal = 23. I feel bit bad on this score. Is this score very bad. Am I below than the avg score of people who take diagnostic test? Thanks in advance for your kind response and advice.

Personally when I started out I was scoring in the same range as well. This just means that for us we have to study quite a bit more and to fully understand both Quant. and Verbal sections. Do not let your practice score put you down. I would develop a study plan that compliments and goes in depth with the 60 day prep course. I am currently working with the 60 prep course, though I found this program a full month into my studies I still use it to help me stay focused on my goal.

Though your initial score may be low your, this does not mean that you final product will be low as well. I would not schedule the test until you feel 100% confident with your GMAT test taking abilities. I have been studying now for going on two months and still feel I an some time away from a comfortable test date (G-Day).

As you study you will notice improvements I suggest taking roughly one practice test a week to start building your stamina. Throughout your study's you will notice improvements in you testing abilities, thus improving your score.

Good luck and Welcome to Beat the GMAT!!

hi karthik ,

i took my gmat prep test 1 yday n landed up with 440 ... pathetic score to say the least .
q- 25
v- 25

So we are on the same page here. But once i reviewed the test i was shocked to find 14 of the 22 mistakes (in quants) i had done were very silly. Like missing out on decimal points, subtraction , division etc.

So i would suggest that you go back and see wat mistakes u have done n try not to repeat it again. Im trying hard to avoid silly mistakes.

Im planning to give my gmat end of june or early july.
hoping to give one test every week/10 days depending on progress.

all the best bro :)

Don't let your score define you. You can always change your score. Crack the books and get down to work. One of the great things about the GMAT is that there is no 'good' and 'bad'. There are several ways of classifying a score:

(1) How does it rank relative to your goal school. HBS has an average GMAT score of ~720, so by that metric, you're a little low. But no everyone dreams of going to HBS. Figure out what school you're gunning for, then set the average GMAT score as you goal.

(2) The GMAT score maps directly to a percentile, so you always know exactly what percentage of people score above you and what percentage of people scored below you. 350 is a 6 percentile score, so you outscored 6 percent of other test takers.
