Value of "x-1"

What is the value of x -1?
(1) x + 1 =3
(2) x - 1 < 3

subtracting 2 from both sides i can find the value of x-1, sufficient

2) is not sufficient

St.1) x + 1 =3 --> x=2 so x-1 = 1............suff.
St.2) x-1<3 ---> x<4 not suff
