Please review my profile and help me figure out the best timeline and competitiveness for a MBA.
Profile:
Age: 29 currently
GMAT: 700 (taken twice, first time scored 590)
GPA: 3.57 (Biochem & History); top 10
Grad School: 3.7 (International Affairs) Ivy, graduated with honors & distinctions
Grad School Internship: United Nations NY and Field office in Eastern Europe - 4 months
EC: over 100+ of volunteer work at local hospital, developed a cancer buddy program and active member, volunteer with 2 NGOs, involved with immigrant population in current city of residence and clean up programs..etc.. (i have quite a lot of stuff here)
Work Exp:
1.5 yrs between undergrad and grad school: 6 months with Start up NGO, 1yr Middle School Science and Math Teacher (won teaching award from district)
1.5 yrs working for a large consulting firm focus health and non-profit markets: Clients such as USAID, World Bank, UNAIDS,etc.. (currently emlpoyeed with this firm)
Career goals - Move directly into Program Management for larger foundation and INGOs. Eventually planning to start a non-profit consulting business with focus on health and education of immigrant populations in US and Western countries.
Situation: During my grad school I was diagnosed with late stage II/early on-set of stage III cancer. I took a break from school for a year for surgery and chemo. Cancer is in remission however I have scans and other things that I need to do every 3 months. Really need to be on employer health plan and be monitored closely. This is a 5 yr follow-up which ends for me in 2012. I personally am a bit scared of being back at school before I get the green light from my docs.
Questions needing guidance:
1- Is it okay in my situation to be applying to school at 31yrs of age? I would have 5yrs of total work exp? If I go earlier I will have less work exp to show progress and probably be limited to schools that I can apply to and worried about things coming back....
2- Schools I am targetting are: Duke, Kellogg (love this place) and Cornell. Maybe be a round 2 at Yale. Do I even stand a chance at these places? Or am I not looking at the right mix of schools.
3- Any advice how to address this health stuff in my essays as they have changed me as a person and the EC activites I am involved in. Is it okay if I mix it into things to show persistence, courage, impact...
