here the sentence is using contrasting the sales between two countries and hence contrast to should be used. The sales are not compared. However if none of the options mentions "In contrast to" then probably comparison would have worked

Statement E: does not have any sense.

Statement D: word compare should be used here there is pattern of sales differences (which is indeed trade deficit or imbalance). so contrast is appropriate to highlight the pattern change...

So A is most proper...

Statement B & C: from a cause & effect point of view, i see these statements as reversing the US selling activity and decline in trade deficit...


any more elaborations please???
