IBM workers use desktops

by gmatdriller » Thu Oct 04, 2012 12:47 am
IBM workers use desktops in their offices, and a few of them develop visual challenges as a result. These problems can be reversed, and recurrences halted, by implementing changes to individual desktop computer work spaces. Because carrying out these changes for all workers would be very expensive, IBM's plan is to implement changes only when a worker reports visual-related problems. Nevertheless, such changes would improve the productivity of all of IBM's workers.
The information given, if accurate, could best be used in support of which of the following positions?

A. It would be to IBM's benefit to reduce the number of its workers.
B. IBM workers would require training on how to use the modified desktop workspaces.
C. IBM's current plan might not be to its long-term benefit.
D. When IBM's current desktop computer work spaces were designed, it was known that the design might induce visual challenges.
E. IBM's desktop computer work areas must be enhanced in order to satisfy industry standards.

I chose A, because i feel IBM would otherwise want to retain its staffs by treating the affected workers.

Kindly make your inputs before I post OA... Thanks.

C is the correct answer because IBM chooses to fight with the problem when it has already occurred and not to prevent it. In the long term such policy is likely not to stop more and more workers from experiencing problems with eyesight and, as a result, still relatively many workers (if not almost all) will probably need to have their work stations changed.

Hi Kasia@EconomistGMAT
But the passage says "These problems can be reversed, and recurrences halted, by implementing changes to individual desktop computer work spaces." Not convinced how such problems will probably affect many
workers in the future.

Also, how does C (a lack of long-term benefit) ties to increase in productivity as mentioned in the conclusion?

I look forward to hearing your.

The problems can be reversed by implementing changes to work spaces NOW. We don't know how many workers are going to develop visual challenges and that is why answer C says "IBM's current plan MIGHT NOT be to its long-term benefit" and not WILL NOT. We are not sure but it is possible that many workers will experience problems and definitely all of them will work less effectively (this is stated in the conclusion).
