HELP NEEDED - SO CONFUSED GMAT-650

by ganank » Fri Sep 25, 2009 6:17 pm
HI

I got a 650 on GMAT - q41 v39 awa 6

I was very disappointed with my quant score and know that with more work I can do better. I have a 3.9 GPA, 7 years work experience at top consulting and entertainment companies, good extra-curricular and some really good essays.

I want to apply to ivy league but know my GMAT and especially my quant is low. I want to make Harvard & Wharton's first round deadline in a weeks time and therefore do not really want to have to retake the GMAT.

with a 650 and what I beleive to be a strong standout application I believe I may have an slim outside chance of Ivy league acceptance. Would you agree? Problems is I would ovbiously rather have a good chance and would 50 points on my GMAT increase my chances greatly or should I rely on the rest of my application to compensate. I think if I had 670 or 680 I would be happy but am really disappointed with 650.

I am confident I can increase my score by 50-60 points if I study hard and take it again but not sure if all the trouble is worth it if the magnitude of the benefit does not outweigh the cost.

Some advice would be greatly appreciated, this decision is killing me :(
Darren

Hi Darren,

The GMAT isn't everything. You can always justify your lowish quant score with supplemental courses you've taken in undergrad or even community college.

Just make sure you mention this justification in your application essays.

If there was something worng with your prep... i.e. you used the bad prep materials or didn't study enough... you should consider retaking.

I think the way most schools consider applicants is to put each app in one of three piles: 1) Probable admit; 2) Probable reject; 3) room for debate. You want your app to be in the 1st category. Perhaps your GPA is good enough to get it there... but toget into Ivy b-school with a 650, you need a stellar stellar app.

First attempt? If so I would say a retake is only going to cost you 30 days. Most people I have spoken to do better on their second attempt simply because they are familiar with the process and they have a good idea where to focus their efforts.

IE: I was strong in Algebra but Geometry cost me. Or RC is a bear but SC I rock.

Sure up your solid areas and try to improve your problem areas. Then when round 2 comes, you'll rock the exam.

Also, why stress about first round? A solid application will shine despite the round it is in. Focus on getting the GMAT score that pairs with your application.
