GPA Question from International University

by snaggled » Mon Jul 21, 2008 9:27 am
Hi there, I have 2 questions:

1) I attended a UK university studying BSc(Honors) in Computer Science. This was a 3 year course and the only year that contributed towards my final result was the final year. I did very little work in the first two years, and studied intensively for my final year. As a result I achieved very low marks in the first 2 years and very high marks for the final year, I have a '1st' degree which is the highest achievable final grade with the exception of a distinction. However my overall GPA from the entire 3 years is low. Should I point this out or try and explain it on my application ? Will the University take the final year marks as the GPA or all 3 years ?

2) Secondly, I briefly attended a Business School part time to study for an MBA. I was there for 1 semester but the part-time route did not work for me and so I dropped out. Do I need to mention this time as part of my application ?

Thanks in advance

Dear snaggled,

1) You will report the cumulative GPA. However, I would encourage you to provide some explanation to the grading system in your applications as it is a little unusual. I also think it would be worthwhile for you to have your transcript evaluated by a credentialing service (www.wes.org) to ensure you have an equivalent US bachelor's degree and to get an accurate assessment of your GPA.

2) I think it is important to include your one semester and an explanation as to why you did not continue. This coursework will demonstrate your genuine interest in business school and affirm your decision to go full-time.

Good luck,
Lisa

Are these 3rd party services for translating grades of international students reputable? It seems like they are not regulated at all, which is concerning.

I also have a UK degree, and immigrated here a few years ago; I've heard lots of stories from fellow expats about these services, e.g. translation of BScs to MScs, as well as inconsistent results.

What do top business schools prefer?

Dear lion147,

Many credential evaluators are questionable, but there are a few that are reputable and trusted by the schools. World Evaluation Services (www.wes.org) is one that has a solid reputation and been in business for a long time. Most schools will provide one or two services they recommend, either on their websites or if you email asking for a recommendation.

Lisa
