Retail sales rose 8/10 of 1 percent in August, intensifying expectations that personal spending in the July-September quarter more than doubled that of the 1.4 percent growth rate in personal spending for the previous quarter.

IMO A . What is correct? OA B

Here's why A is wrong:

"that personal spending in the July-September quarter more than doubled that of the 1.4 % growth rate".

it would mean personal spending in July-Sept more than doubled the personal spending of the growth rate. Growth rates do not have personal spending.The second "that" refers to personal spending and muddles the meaning of the sentence.

Answer should be B.

The "more than doubled" part should be in future tense since it something that is expected to happen in the future and not something that has already happened. The quarter ends in September (comes after August).

Option B corrects this by using "would".

This is how I understand this.

IMO C and E can be kicked out because comma before that is wrong....

Can someone please tell if my reasoning is wrong...

E. of personal spending in the July-September quarter, that it would more than double that of - Wordy

Double is a verb here.. Hence would do or would double is the correct usage here.
