paying baseball players

by mj41 » Thu Mar 25, 2010 4:17 am
Even though the costs of paying baseball players amounts to a sum greater than one half of overall cost of operating a Major League Baseball team last year, Major League Baseball franchise owners were still willing to pay increasingly higher salaries to top players.

amounts to a sum greater
amounts to more
amounted to more
amounted to a greater sum
amounted to greater

OA is C

Can someone please explain why E is wrong

ok.. lemme try.. experts can correct if wrong.

C) amounted to more than....
E) amounted to greater

Greater than is more appropriate when describing numbers.
For example, Even though the costs of paying bb players amounted to greater than 50 million dollars, franchise owners
were still willing to pay increasingly higher salaries to top players.

More than should be used when describing number of items or making a comparison

Cost of X is more than the cost of Y
or in this case
The cost of paying bb players amounted to more than half the cost of operating a League BB team.

I think there is no comparison made. We are only stating that the amount is "more" than ....blah blah .....we are not comparing the costs ....if we were comparing we would use "greater"................

In case you think I am wrong ...tell me the two things that are being compared here ? and why are we comparing them ?
