Is the following sentence correct?


Despite John's weakness in mathematics, he has scored high in math.

=> Is the "he" ambiguous?
=> Can't he refer to John?

Nope. "He" can't refer to "John's". Only "His" can refer to "John's". Both should be possessive.

Corrected form of the sentence could sound like,
Despite John is weak in mathematics, he has scored high in math.
