The annual rent collected by a corporation from a certain building was x percent more in 1998 than in 1997 and y percent less in 1999 than in 1998. Was the annual rent collected by the corporation from the building more in 1999 than in 1997?

(1) x > y
(2) xy/100 < x - y

A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient

1997=100
1998=100+x
1999=(100+x)*(100-y)/100
problem asks
does 1999>1997?
or
(100+x)*(100-y)/100>100
10000+100x-100y-xy>10000
100x-100y-xy>0
100x>100y+xy

s1) insuff

s2)SUFF
xy/100<x-y
xy<100x-100y
xy+100y<100x
same as our inequality.
Answer is B.

Let the annual rate collected in 1997 be p
so in 1998 --> it is (1+x/100)p
in 1999 --> it is (1+x/100)(1-y/100)p

Now we have to compare 1999 with 1997..
St.1 if x >y insufficient eg 1.10 x 0.909 = 0.9999
1.5 x 0.8 = 1.20 here at both place x>y
St.2 : xy/100<x-y
divide both side by xy
100x-100y >xy------------i

also for 1999 to be > 1997
(1+x/100)(1-y/100)p>p
--> 1+x/100 -y/100 -xy/10000 >1
--> (x-y)100 -xy >0------------ii

i and ii are same so suff..
