(1) x < 4
(2) x > -3
y = 7

when | x + 3| is positive and | 4 - x| is positive
i.e. x < 4 and x > -3

1) alone is not sufficient
2) alone is not sufficient

Combined
y = | x + 3| + | 4 - x| = x + 3 + 4 - x = 7

initially the q stumped me
but then luking at the statments i got my ans

its simple putting x=-3 or 4 we get y=7
and substituting x >4 and x<-3 the answers varies
hence y=7 when -3<x<4
i.e is nothing but s1 and s2 combined

y = | x + 3| + | 4 - x|
y = 7 only if | x + 3| = x+3 and | 4 - x|= 4-x
| x + 3| = x+3 --> x+3> 0 --> x>-3
and | 4 - x|= 4-x --> 4-x > 0 --> x<4
