I would choose A. No real good reason though other than in choice B "the land" seems awkward.

Hence A should be the correct answer

A for me too.
Gerund form is preferable.
The GMAT is indeed adaptable. Whenever I answer RC, it proficiently 'adapts' itself to mark my 'right' answer 'wrong'.
