famine hits

by sanju09 » Fri Mar 19, 2010 4:52 am
A shepherd has 1 million sheeps at the beginning of Year 2000. The numbers grow by x% (x > 0) during the year. A famine hits his village in the next year and many of his sheeps die. The sheep population decreases by y% during 2001 and at the beginning of 2002 the shepherd finds that he is left with 1 million sheeps. Which of the following is correct?
(A) x^2 > y^3
(B) y^2 > x^3
(C) x > y
(D) y > x
(E) x = y

In the beginning there was 100
In year 2000 the increase was x = 10% so int became 110
In year 2001 the decrease was y%
if you take y = x as option 5
2002 beginnning it will be 99 so y has to be slightly less than 10 or x

both A and C.

let's simplify the figures and compare.

if 100 increases to 125 and then decreases to 100.

the increase ( x%) is 25 and then decrease ( y%) is 20.

obviously, since % increases will always be positive numbers, it square will also follow the same relationship i.e

X^2 > Y^2.
