Profile Evaluation

by victorypants » Sun Apr 24, 2011 3:14 pm
Hi. I was hoping to get some feedback on my profile and some potential schools I have on my radar.

My Profile:

White American Male. 29 years old at matriculation. Attended small regional state school. Had a weak 2.7 overall gpa which was the result of immaturity and a lack of clear career goals. I also worked 25-30 hours a week in college and commuted 40 minutes one way to go to school. But I did have a 3.2 for my last 60 credit hours and my gpa within my major (sport management/business administration) was higher as well. I know how detrimental my gpa could be to my chances at top 20 schools, so I recently signed up for a business statistics course at the local community college to help show that I can handle the academic rigor. I am taking the gmat tomorrow, and while I know that practice scores cannot be taken as completely predictive of your real score, I have been hitting 710 or 720 in my last 5 tests. The breakdowns have been roughly equal in terms of Q and V, mid to high 40s.

As for work experience, I have worked in my family's small business (manufacturing, have had over a million dollars in sales in a year, <20 employees) most of my life. I worked there during college and have been there ever since, except for a 6 month period during which I moved 1000 miles away to Colorado to become a snowboarding instructor.

Extracurriculars are kind of thin. I like to run for exercise and plan to enter a few 5ks this summer. Also, I'm an avid reader. Literary fiction and non-fiction. Was considering trying to learn Spanish from computer software program over the summer as well. Also, as I mentioned before, I love to snowboard, even though I grew up a 1000 miles from any mountains.

Career goals: Short term: strategy/management consulting. Long term: Take a strategic planning position with a leading American based company. These are the very condensed version of my goals. I can delve much deeper into them during the application process. Also, I would like to live in Chicago, Boston, New York, or DC preferably.

Schools I'm considering: Northwestern, Chicago, Tuck, Duke, Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, Vandy, and Wash U.

I am hoping for any feedback on my chances at these programs and possibly point out some other schools that might fit my profile and goals that I might have overlooked. Any other advice is welcome. Thanks in advance for your time.

Dear victorypants,

I hope the GMAT went well for you and you scored in the range you desired. Based on the other information in your post, I think you have a good mix of reach and reasonable programs (assuming you scored 680+ on the GMAT). Your self-assessment is on target in that your potential weakness is extracurricular activities. You might find a community organization or nonprofit to get involved with now so that you have 6+ months with that group by the time you apply. Likewise, if you decide to take another course for your alternative transcript, stay with a quantitative class like calculus, accounting or finance. Other than that, you want to get started on your applications as soon as they are released over the summer and submit in the first round. Your essays, resume and recommendations are crucial parts of your application and you need to them to strengthen your application.

Good luck,
Lisa
