Hi there,

I am a 28 years old spanish engineer.

I want to enter a business school this comming fall. I am unsure about wich school to choose (I have started my applications for some european (London business school, Cambridge, Oxford...) and two american schools (Harvard and Stanford). I think that a top-5 school could be unreallistic but I would like to have your opinion:

- I have two master degree in engineering. I have one for a top spanish university and other for a top french engineering school. However, my scores are not the best... (around 7 out of 10). I know that this can be an important problem but I think that having these two degrees taken in two different countries could compensate (and european rating system differs from american, as an example the average time taken in Spain for obtaining a master´s degree in engineering is around 9 years...)

- I have 3.5 years of professional experience in two companies. 6 month in a consulting IT engineering in a country different than mine and 3 years in a multinational company as project manager and maintenance manager.

- I have taken the GMAT and obtained the following results: Quant 50, Verbal 41, overall 750. I have an IR of 7.

- As mentioned, I want to porsuite an mba but I am unsure of how my low academic record would affect it. I think that it can be anyway compensated by the relatively strong GMAT.

What's your oppinion?

Thank you so much

Your academic profile is fine with your GMAT score but what differentiates you from other similar applicants per MBA Evaluation Criteria. So, outside of your academic profile what is your record of promotions, impact, leadership, teamwork and global exposure within your professional and community service experience? This along with outstanding personal characteristics and demonstrating fit with your target programs will help determine the competitiveness of your candidacy.

Good luck,

Hey there dude,
Well for the Top 10 schools more than just a great GMAT is necessary and the three things they will be looking for is: 1. Proven success 2. Leadership/ leadership potential 3. Pedigree.

So, if you have done amazingly well at work PLUS have good leadership PLUS come from a fantastic university/firm/family, then Top 10 becomes more realistic. With your 750 and good work experience, I don't think you have to go much farther than Top20-25, all of which should have the capacity to help you reach your goals as well, so in fact you have nothing to worry about (except maybe for what you are going to write in your essays :) ).

Whatever the case, Harvard and Stanford will not be easy (its not easy for anyone, even for folks who work for McKinsey have a 790 and graduated with a 9/10 from a fantastic school), but you can apply to them as your "Dream schools" (but should also balance these schools out as a part of your overall strategy)

Hope this helps!!!!

ppalge,

I work with the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University and saw your questions regarding your strength as an MBA candidate. What will make you stand out is your strong academic background in engineering and (as MBAPrepAdvantage and Jon@Admissionado pointed out) your leadership and proven success. I know that you're interested in Harvard and Stanford, but have you considered any of the other top ten business schools?

I ask because you may be a strong candidate for Johnson's new one-year MBA program in New York City at Cornell Tech. MBA candidates learn and complete projects with engineering and computer science programs. The MBA program is uniquely focused on the intersection of business and technology as well. It seems like a potentially good fit for you. Here's some more information should you be interested in getting more details about prerequisites, admissions process, etc. The program is still accepting applicants for its May 2014 inaugural class. https://bit.ly/12YAcad

I'm also here as a resource and would be happy to help answer your questions about Johnson at Cornell or other MBA application tips in general. No pressure, of course. My email is [email protected].

Best wishes in your MBA journey.
