DS Question

Q: Of the 60 animals on a certain farm, 2/3 are either pigs or cows. How many of the animals are cows?
(1) the farm has more than twice as many cows at it has pigs.
(2) the farm has more than 12 pigs.

Unfortunately, I don't have the answer to the above problem. Experts out there please opine on how to resolve the problem.

Say, number of cows = C and number of pigs = P
Hence, (C + P) = (2/3)*60 = 40

Statement 1: C > 2P
C ≥ 27 and P ≤ 13.

Not sufficient

Statement 2: P > 12
Therefore, C < 28

Not sufficient

1 & 2 Together: C = 27 and P = 13

Sufficient

The correct answer is C.

number of pigs and cows = p+c = 40

a c> 2p so we take c= 3p giving p=10 and c=30

also, c=4p, giving p=8 and c=32. not sufficient.

b p>12 means p=13 giving c= 27 or p= 14 meaning c= 26. not sufficient.

a+b

p>12 so we take p=13 meaning c=27. as c>2p
for p=14 meaning c=29 gives p+c > 40.

thus C is sufficient.

Hello Anurag,

Thank you for the explanation..What I am still not clear on, is the first statement which states "the farm has more than twice as many cows at it has pigs".

My interpretation of this was C > 2P rather than C ≥ 2P, am I reading it all wrong?

Sorry that was a typo. Edited it.

C > 2P --> C + P > 3P --> 3P < 40 --> P < 40/3 --> P ≤ 13 --> C ≥ 27
