Usage of So.

by megadeth » Sun Jul 08, 2012 12:33 am
Can someone help me out with the usage of "so" in the sentence below
"Mariah behaves so arrogantly these days as though she is a beauty queen"

I understand that the correct form for this would be
Mariah behaves so arrogantly these days as though she were a beauty queen"

But there is so ... in the sentence so should we use a "that" or not. I mean shouldn't the sentence read
Mariah behaves so arrogantly these days that it seems as though she were a beauty queen"

The use of a present tense after "as though" suggests that what is stated might be TRUE. The use of subjunctive shows that the action is UNREAL. The use of present tense is also often considered informal. That's why it is better to use the subjunctive form on the GMAT.

Thanks for the response but you missed my question i think.
I said that wouldn't a "that/as to" follow a so in the sentence

Mariah behaves so arrogantly these days as though she were a beauty queen.

If you notice, there is no "that" in the sentence above. So will it still be correct ?
