Chips

by ricky » Tue Aug 05, 2008 6:17 am
In a certain game, a large bag is filled with blue, green, purple and red chips worth 1, 5, x and 11 points each, respectively. The purple chips are worth more than the green chips, but less than the red chips. A certain number of chips are then selected from the bag. If the product of the point values of the selected chips is 88,000, how many purple chips were selected?

i would go with B.2

here it goes... .

88000 can be written as 8*11*10*10*10

can be further broken into 2*2*2* 11* 2*5* 2*5* 2*5

hence its 2^6*11*5^3

now from the question we know purple is between 5 and 11 therefore

6,7,8,9,10.

we cant choose 7 and 9 because they dont yield in 2's for us

we cant take 6 because though it will give as 2' sit will give us 3 as well which we dont want..

we cant take 10 because it will give us 2's and 5's and we dont need any more 5s.

hence 8 because 2 8's we give us 6 2's ( 2^6)

thus the answer is 2.

please let me know the OA and if u have any doubts...

because 10 can be broken into 2 and 5 .. though it will give us 2 it will also give us 5 , we already have the required number of 5's ( 5^3).. any more 5's will not lead us to 88000 . hence we have drop 10.

hope its clear..
