Eagles leaving nest

Dear Friends,

I was having problems in answering the following question.

Five fledgling sea eagles left their nests in western Scotland this summer, bringing to 34 the number of wild birds successfully raised since transplants from Norway began in 1975.
(A) bringing
(B) and brings
(C) and it brings
(D) and it brought
(E) and brought


Please help.

OA after some discussions.
My choice was option D

Five fledgling sea eagles left their nests in western Scotland this summer - bringing modifies this phrase referring to the action which reduced the number of wild birds.

B, C - uses present tense - wrong
D - it has no clear referent
E - comma + and - is almost always wrong - moreover this distorts the meaning.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

In B, brings (plural) does not agree with eagles (singular). Eliminate B.

In C and D, it lacks a clear antecedent. Eliminate C and D.

In E, the succession of past tense verbs (left...and brought) implies that the eagles performed two successive, distinct actions. The intended meaning is that there was ONE action (five fledgling sea eagles LEFT), and AT THE SAME TIME, another action was performed (BRINGING the number to 34). To express CONTEMPORANEOUS ACTION -- one action happening at the same time as another action -- we use the present participle: Five fledgling sea eagles LEFT their nests in western Scotland this summer, BRINGING to 34 the number of wild birds successfully raised since transplants from Norway began in 1975. Eliminate E.

The correct answer is A.
