A new commercial radio station in Greenfield plans to play songs that were popular hits fifteen to twenty-five years ago. It hopes in this way to attract an audience made up mainly of people between thirty-five and forty-five years old and thereby to have a strong market appeal to advertisers.

Each of the following, if true, strengthens the prospects that the radio station's plan will succeed EXCEPT:

(A) People tend to remain very fond of the music that they heard when they were in their teens and early twenties.
(B) In a number of cities demographically similar to Greenfield, radio stations that play recordings of popular music from fifteen to twenty-five years ago have succeeded commercially.
(C) People in the thirty-five- to forty-five-year-old age group are more likely to listen to the radio for news than for music.
(D) The thirty-five- to forty-five-year-old age group is one in which people tend to have comparatively high levels of income and are involved in making household purchases.
(E) Among the few radio stations in the Greenfield area, there is none that plays music from this particular period for more than a few hours per week.

I know why C is the correct answer, but I'm not sure about why D can strenghen the prospects that the radio station's plan will succeed.

Yes, C is the right answer.

D strengthens the prospects:
In order to have strong market appeal to advertisers, the audience must have buying power themselves or have influence on the buying.
So, if the audience has high income levels and is the decision maker for household purchases, it is appealing to advertisers

I cant think that far. i just read it and dun understand why it could strengthen the argurment...because i think it doesnt relate listening to music of those average age people. so i think its out of scope. and i think, why they have to listen to radio while they have money????!!! its not reasonable when just wait for music in radio to listen while i have enough money to buy houses, why have to wait? just buy a ticket and go to see/listen to music in some show!
that is what i thought after reading this argument

OA is C, questions ask us which plan will strengthen the plan's success...D may they be strethning beacuse of buying power assuming their is an intrest to listen old songs also they may not have. but C is one shot clear.

Unfortunately, life is more than concerts and the desire to listen to music may appear while we are shaving, driving to work, working out at the gym, watching our kids at soccer practice...

IMO D

C : I don't agree with C. Consider the case where people are giving 60% of his time for news and 40% of his time for music.
So here, music is also taking a significant part.

D : is looking out of scope, so is not strengthening the argument

answer is C only which doest not strengthen the argument.

now D which says that those age group people have more purchasing capacity hence they will hear the ads in the radio and buy accordingly hence more adds will be given to the radio hence it strengthen the argument

I chose D at first but reeading through the comments and quesiton again, C makes more sense. The idea is to find an answer that either weakens the conclusion or has no effect on it. The question talks about appealing to advertisers by playing songs that were popular 15 years ago. D states that people in that age group have more buying power because of their income levels. C on the other hand talks about people in that age group listening to news rather than music which does not have any effect on the conclusion or the argument.

I guess I need to be more careful when reading questions :)

Hope that helps!!!!... Please add to it if you think my explanation is flawed...

Hi.

Please explain why choice E strengthens the conclusion.
