High verbal, low quant

by wpelzer9 » Mon May 10, 2010 11:17 am
I will be applying to MS Finance programs for the fall of 2011. On my most recent gmat attempt I scored in the 90th percentile in verbal compared to only the 52nd percentile in quantitative. It would obviously be beneficial for me to retake the test, however would admissions departments deny my admittance because of such a low quantitative score even though my overall score is higher than their averages? Thanks.

For MS Finance - you definitely need high quant scores. They generally look at quant scores with magnifying glass! As much as overall score is great, you are applying to a heavy quant program that you plan to specialize in. This means you need to meet certain standards before you can take up further. The way adcoms will see it as - if you cannot manage the required quant score, you probably won't be able to survive the program.

I'd recommend that you study and take GMAT again. Let me know if you've any further questions.

Agreed with Sophia! I am a quant. It's important to score at least 90% in Quant for Top-Tier schools, and maybe 80% for top 20-30.

The issue is not simply the score. Many schools have found that applicants whose quantitative scores are at or below the 50th %ile, cannot handle the classroom quantitative work. There are several good resources for building your math skills. Kaplan has a math refresher course directed specifically at the basics behind GMAT math. Such a course will not only improve your score, but also make your life a lot easier once you get into B-school.

Additionally, I recommend referring through Manhattan books or take up their courses as well. They offer online and in-person courses on how to strategically tackle quant and verbal questions.

Hope this helps.
