Please evaluate my profile

by sagar_exec » Tue Apr 27, 2010 2:35 am
I am an engineer (78%) and MBA (grade of 6.2 out of 9 from IIM), have work-ex of 6 years (3 yrs IT+ 3 yrs Finance), not much extra-currics. Probably will get good reco. Need to know what chance do I have/ what GMAT score will be considered good if I want to apply to top10-20 Bschool in US. Thanks in advance.

Do you already have an MBA? If so, some schools will not allow you to pursue a second one. Also, you should look at the 80% range of GMAT scores of your target schools to get an idea of competitive score ranges. The range is usually around 600 an above for top programs. Finally, there are many factors that will be considered in addition to your GMAT score. Among them are your career progression, ability to articulate your goals, extracurriculars, and key differentiators.

Thanks Scottie... yes I am talking of 2nd MBA... well some positives: good background (engineer+MBA from Indian Institute of Management), work experience of 6 years (with diversity - IT and Finance), probably will get good reco as well
Some negatives: not particularly great score (25%ile in undergrad, 50%ile in grad), all Indian work-ex, age over 30, no great extra-currics

Pls let me know which schools (ranking) should I go for, and what GMAt score will be considered good given my profile

Hi Sagar,

Quite a few IIM grads start looking for a second MBA after several years of work-ex in India. Each candidate might have his/her own motivation to do so. The key is to present your profile well and convincingly put forth your reasons for pursuing a second MBA.

If you can crack the CAT, GMAT shouldn't be a big hurdle for you to cross.

A candidate with a similar profile (2nd MBA, close to 30, no overseas experience, but purely finance, he wasn't from IIM) that I've been interacting with (on another forum) applied to 4 schools. He's got an offer from 3 of them and is getting interviewed by the 4th one.

So choose your schools well and put in your best effort.

Come back here when you get your GMAT score and we can continue the discussion about which schools you could look at. I'd specifically want to know more about your last 3 years in finance. That's the part that you can use to give yourself an edge vis-a-vis the other engineer/IT guys from India.

For now, focus on your GMAT.

Good luck!
