Bold Faced - Film Critic

Film critic: As computer technology continues to become more sophisticated, movies increasingly exchange a cohesive and satisfying storyline for a series of improbable events designed to showcase special effects. The recent film Space Battle is a prime example of this trend. The main characters are not even properly introduced before the first computer-generated chaos engulfs the screen. Then the movie is off and running from one planet to the next with no theme except impossible action sequences and sarcastic one-liners. It is as if a new sport appeared with no consistent rules, no familiar players, and no laws of physics, not even gravity.

The portions on the text in boldface play which of the following roles?

A) The first is a generalization for which a specific example will be given; The second is an analogy comparing the situation being discussed with another that may be more familiar.

B) The first is a general principle that is contradicted in the following example; The second is a prediction of a future trend.

IMO C.

1st BF sentence says 'As computer technology continues to become more sophisticated, movies exchange a cohesive and satisfying storyline for a series of improbable events designed to showcase special effects'

However, 2nd BF sentence says that 'It is as if a new sport appeared with no consistent rules, no familiar players, and no laws of physics, not even gravity'

Means 1st and 2nd statements are contradicting each other.

imo A

First bold is obviously a conclusion. I think conclusion can also be referred to generalization in this case. Support to this is the right next sentence (not in bold). The 2BF, is an analogy in familiar terms. I like the word 'may be' to describe more familiar.

I dont see any prediction whatsoever.

hmmmm...........my pick D

first Bold Faced ......talks of an emerging trend in movies......second Bold Faced.....an analogy b/w movies(with a series of improbable events...) & sport(new...with no consistent rules, no familiar players, and no laws....) to drive home the point

i am between A and D but i tend to choose D for this CR because i dont see what the other is A mentioned....

Answer A
A) The first is a generalization for which a specific example will be given; The second is an analogy comparing the situation being discussed with another that may be more familiar.

In B)The example given afterward supports the BF statement 1 , not contradicts it
C)The first is not an example, it explains how preferences are changing with the advent of new technology
D)There is no prediction taking place.
It explains an ongoing phenomenon.
E(There is no conclusion.It's a bunch of facts.

I will go with A,

Here firstly a genral statement is given (As computer technology continues to become more sophisticated....) then an example was given....
(The recent film Space Battle is a prime example of this trend..)
and second BOLD sentence is acting like a analogy..between the special effects and a sport..(It is as if a new sport appeared with no consistent rules, no familiar players, and no laws of physics, not even gravity. )

Lets wait for OA.

Author here is trying to say that if X continues to happen, incident y which already is happening will start to happen more frequently..i think this sounds as prediction.

Pls note nowhere in the sentence do we have if , will,often.
The present tense continues is used to denote actions that take place in general.

I agree it's A. First is a generalization of the author's view about today's movies and second is an analogy with a new sport which shares same characteristics as the these new movies.

Nice work guys!

Here is the explanation:

The first portion is a general statement or principle that the stimulus will explore. Choice C is eliminated as it mistakenly identifies the first portion as an example. Choice D incorrectly identifies the first portion as a prediction, when the stimulus is discussing a phenomenon that is currently occurring. Choice B correctly identifies the first portion as a general principle, but incorrectly asserts that the example that follows contradicts the principle, when in fact it illustrates the principle. Choice E incorrectly indicates that the second portion in boldfaced type is the main conclusion of the argument. In fact, the second portion is an analogy designed to support the argument. Choice A correctly identifies the role played by each boldfaced portion.

Best option is "A".
First is an general statement carrying an event which is happening and will continue to do so and 2nd is an analogy.

am i right?
