Test in less than 3 weeks - Should I Postpone?

by joz » Mon Jan 18, 2010 7:22 am
I'm having a hard time determining if I should postpone my test date. Below are my practice test scores to date. Everytime I improve my quant score I see a reduction in verbal. Any advice on how to overcome this? Assuming I have my best verbal and quant score on the same day I'd be in good shape, but if not, 660 is not a score I'm happy with. Thanks in advance.

Hi Joz, i don't think you Verbal and Quant scores are relative, probably there is a slight lack of focus by the time you start Verbal. Though i am no expert, but i would suggest taking a number of tests, maybe 2 tests a day and then spend time analyzing the mistakes, i.e, check if the questions you got wrong were because of carelessness on your part or lack of concept. I don't think postponing test dates really solves the problem since you are very close to the idea hit range, I suggest you take 2 tests a day for approximately 4 - 5 days, average the Quant and Verbal Scaled score and that should be your actual skill level. This should help you to build your confidence and do better on the real test.

Have you pinpointed areas in Verbal that you get wrong the most?

The majority of my mistakes seem to occur in SC. I have the Manhattan guide and have been diligently trying to correct this problem over the past few days. I've also added another practice test score from last weekend. I need to make a decision in the next few days regarding cancelling.

i suggest you diligently go over the mgmat sc guide .. go chapter by chapter, solving the requisite og problems along the way.. once you are done with this you can take the secong gmatprep cat to see where you stand.

remember .. you have the option to postpone upto 7 days before the test

Trust your instincts Joz. It sounds like you are really hesitant. Do you think it's simple cold feet, or do you think you're not giving yourself a fair chance yet? Think about, and if you do postpone, consider finding a study buddy for Verbal. Working through mistakes aloud with a sounding board really works for me.

If you can still postpone I would recommend that you do. Odds are you will score in your range. What the GMAT taught me yesterday is that everything has to go right for you to score at the top of your range. I would say delay it until your target score is in the middle of your practice test score range.

Just read your GMAT post osirus and sorry to hear you didn't achieve your desired score. I ended up not pushing the test back and since there is a $250 fee to do so now, I won't be. Looks like I'll need some serious luck or will be taking it twice. I Plan on taking the 2nd GMATPrep test tomorrow. Will post with updates.....
