IMO D

The cancer therapy research team is citing so ITS is required. Discard A and B.

Past to past HAD usage. Discard C.

Between D and E, D is correct. Recent failure.

IMO D.

There is a 2:3 split in usage of pronouns.Team is singular therefore their is incorrect.There is one more issue in the sentence-the usage of has been. Logically, can a team apply for govt funding before its failure[in this sentence].Obviously,first the teams' gene therapy treatment failed and then the team applied for additional govt.funding.

A) wrong -pronouns
B) wrong for same reason
C) You need had been.Is is incorrect.
D) This is correct. Recent is an adjective and modifies failure.unexpected is another adjective that modifies failure.SO this construction means a failure that was 1) unexpected and 2) recent.
E) This is incorrect for it uses the adverb recently.AN adverb cannot modify a noun.It can only modify verbs,adjectives,and other adverbs.So here recently is modifying unexpected. This construction of Adv+Adj.+ Noun means -> A failure that was unexpected and one that was recently unexpected.This gives an impression that the failure of the gene therapy was at some point in time expected.Does the sentence intend to say that? NO

I vote for E as an adverb can modify verb, adjective and another adverb.
Since unexpected is an adjective , recently correctly modifies it.

Whats the OA?

As far as what I have read , only an adverb can modify an adjective. Considering recent to be an adjective, how can it modify another adjective ' unexpected'

Please explain.

I have already told in my explanation that recent is NOT modifying another adjective unexpected.This is illegal.Recent is infact modifying the NOUN failure.

Remember you can use any number of adjectives in a sequence,with each modying the noun.

i.e adj1,adj2,adj3 NOUN(X).

Here adji1 adj2 adj3 are all modifying the noun(X).

You can also say say adj1 adj2 adj3 Noun(X)

You can also say adj1,adj2,and adj3 Noun(x).

Here is a working example.

He is a smart and intelligent man.

What are smart and intelligent? adjectives man?

He is an angry young man.

What are angry and young? adjectives man? noun.

This sentence basically means that the man is both young and angry.angry is NOT modifying young.

You won't say : He is an angrily young man. Will you?

where angrily -adverb young -adj.

There are two grammatical mistakes in this sentence, one concerning the possessive pronoun their and one concerning the tense of the verb phrase has been.

The antecedent of their is the cancer therapy research team, which is a collective noun that is grammatically singular even though it refers to a group of people. Thus, this pronoun should be its rather than their. This narrows our answer choices down to C, D, and E.

Answer choice C is different from D and E in its use of the verb is rather than had been. The past perfect tense form is used to describe an action that was completed before another past event took place. The treatment failed before the cancer therapy research team requested more funds, so both the original has been and the present tense verb is in choice C are incorrect.

Choice D retains the adjective recent, while choice E substitutes the adverb recently. Because this word describes the noun failure, recent is the correct option.

The correct answer choice is D, which fixes both the pronoun number error and the verb tense error and keeps the adjective recent.
