A firm that specializes in the analysis of handwriting claims from a one-page writing sample that it can assess more than 300 personality traits, including enthusiasm, imagination, and ambition.

(A) from a one-page writing sample that it can assess
(B) from a one-page writing sample it has the ability of assessing
(C) the ability, from a one-page writing sample, of assessing
(D) to be able, from a one-page writing sample, to assess
(E) being able to assess, from a one-page writing sample


































OA is D
Hi, everyone. I don't understand why A is wrong. Is A wrong because "it" is ambiguous? Can anyone say something about choice A?

Idiom - Claim... to be.
Only option D uses this idiom.

Idiom - Claim... to be.
Only option D uses this idiom.
Instead of using Quote option,please post ur reply in a new one.

rx_11,

'it' intends to refer firm.But in option A the noun firm is far away and there is another singular noun 'sample' in between.So this IT creates an ambiguity.

Hope this clarify!!

I don't mind using post reply, Quote is fine, many use it. rx_11 entered lot of space in the ques, which made Quote longer.

Choice A has modifier error.

A firm claims from a one page handwriting sample that it can assess more than xyz.

Lets understand the intended meaning of this sentence. Logically this sentence should mean that a firm claims it can assess more than xyz just by reading a 1 page sample.

Thus, the highlighted modifier should modify the verb - "assess" since it provides additional information about the verb "assess"
But the manner in which it is placed next to "claims", it tends to illogically modify "claims".

Notice that modifiers that modify verbs need not be placed close to the verb but when there are two verbs in a sentence, then the modifier must be placed appropriately to modify the correct verb.
