(B) to keep it from --> Ans.
(C) to avoid --> subject unclear again - archaeologists or chalice?
(D) in order that it would avoid --> does not match
(E) in order to keep from --> again no clear subject.

IMO (B). The question essentially is "What was prevented from being stolen?"
