ESSAY QUESTION:
"Some people claim that the measure of a successful government is in how well it directly supports the poorer members of society. Others claim that if the government focuses on lifting the wealthier members, the benefits will reverberate throughout the social structure and the standard of living will rise for everyone."
In your view, to what extent should government be responsible for supporting those members of society who struggle to support themselves? Explain, giving relevant reasons and/or examples to support your position.
YOUR RESPONSE:
Nowadays, with the gap between the poor members of the society and the wealthier portion of the society growing wider and wider, many people are starting to have different views on what the government should do to measure its success as well as bettering the standard of living for the society. Some people believe that the measure of a successful government is how well it directly supports the poorer members of society, and others claim that government should focus on lifting the wealthier members in order to reverberate the benefits throughout the social structure. I believe that government should be focusing a lot more on supporting those members of society who struggle to support themselves, because they could eventually become a great resource for the country, it would dramatically change the overall economy of the country and also it would make the government look extremely generous which could improve foreign relations.
First of all, I believe the government should focus a tremendous amount of effort of helping those poorer members of the society. A great amount of those members either do not have jobs or simply could not have any mobility within their jobs. If the government actually put a conscience effort in helping and supporting the members who struggle to support themselves, those members of the society could eventually be standing on their feet by themselves, which means the government has created a new source of human capital that could help better the community. For example, United States is going through one of its toughest economic recessions currently, and unemployment rate was at a all time high, those who lost their jobs become members of society who struggle to support themselves, and if United States government put a great amount of effort into helping those who lost their jobs, they could eventually be able to find a new job, find a new career, which means they have turn themselves into great human resources that are helping the country altogether.
Secondly, once those who were struggling to support themselves received help from the government, they could be able to work for a living and eventually bring more than just human resource to the government, it could drastically improve the economy of the country. For instance, in the beginning of the 2000s, China had a tragically high unemployment rate, and that simply reflected on how many people needed the government's support to stand on their feet again. The Chinese government then put a great amount of effort specifically into lowering the unemployment rate and at the same time help locating jobs for those who lost their jobs, and that effort has drastically changed the overall economy of the Chinese. The poorer community is a great factor of a horrible economy for a nation, and if the government is able to help those poorer communities, I believe it could eventually revitalize the economy of the nation.
Lastly, government that is exerting conscience effort into helping the poorer communities gives out a vibe that the nation as a whole is a generous country, and it could drastically improve foreign relations of that specific country. United States is a great example of my point. The United States has been known for its philanthropic contributions to other third world countries. The reason the United States is able to do this is because its government is first and foremost putting a great effort in helping the poorer communities domestically, this way, the government receives an image of being the generous and giving nation, which certainly improves the foreign relation of the country. Many people may ask why would foreign relation be so important in this certain issue? It is because governments that obtain great foreign relations with other countries can definitely have aids coming from those other countries when they are supporting those members of society who struggle to support themselves, and it could make the supporting process much more easier and much more effective.
In conclusion, I believe that the government should exert a conscience effort into supporting those members of society who struggle to support themselves. If the government indeed helps out those poorer members, it could turn those people into great human capitals and human resources, and it could also drastically change the overall outlook of the nation's economy, and lastly, the government would be seen as a generous and giving government, which in turn could strengthen relationship with other countries, and improve foreign relations that can become extremely helpful.
