Argument: The following appeared in the editorial section of a local newspaper:
"Commuter use of the new subway train is exceeding the transit company's projections. However, commuter use of the shuttle buses that transport people to the subway stations is below the projected volume. If the transit company expects commuters to ride the shuttle buses to the subway rather than drive there, it must either reduce the shuttle bus fares or increase the price of parking at the subway stations."
Analysis.
============================================================================================================
Managing public transportation always used to be changing as people change their preferences and also with new ways of transportation is emerging with the advancement in technology day by day. The newspaper claims that the shuttle usage can be promoted among the commuters through the mentioned ideas. But this argument presents an idea which is questionable and also it fails to consider the other bolstering evidences which make the validity of the argument questionable.
Primarily, the newspaper presents an idea that reducing bus fares will increase that usage of these buses. But it should have evaluated if the bus fares will already be comparably cheaper than the cost of fuelling the car which is used by the commuters. In addition to that, when the commuters prefers to drive even it is costly compared to bus they would afford to pay the increased parking price. The newspaper's argument fails to strengthen the above ideas by providing substantial evidences.
Also, the argument relies on the underlying assumptions which don't explicate its existence. Here the newspaper makes an assumption that the people who are not travelling through shuttle buses only drive to station. This is not proved and leaves the reader with a question about the other means of commuting to station. If in case there are other means of commutation, those have to be addressed to ensure that users use only shuttle buses.
Although this argument has some flaws, it cannot be said that it is baseless. This argument could be strengthened by providing the evidence to prove the reasoning that commuters drive to station only due to cost issues and by explicating that the assumed fact is only true and there are no underlying alternate explanations for the facts presented.
To sum up, the argument could provide ideas which evidently proves the reasoning and bolsters the assumptions and also may strengthen the facts provided by adding substantial facts based on the further analysis. This will make the argument more persuasive, convincing and justifiable.
