What schools should I be shooting for?

by howell » Wed Oct 15, 2008 2:35 pm
Hi there,

So I just wrapped up taking the GMAT and scored a 720 (Q: 75%, V: 97%) - happy to say the least. But, given that this is expected to be an intensely competitive year for B-school applicants, I'm not so certain what level schools I should be aiming for. Is a Columbia, Chicago or Berkeley a stretch? Are my Quant percentile, GPA going to be dealbreakers?

Here's a snapshot of my education/work history.

-33, male
-Undergrad GPA 2.7 (double major in English and Biology - which killed my GPA btw) at Vanderbilt University
-Masters in Journalism GPA 3.3 at New York University

Work History:
-Three and a half years as a financial journalist at major media outlet, covering the current banking/credit crisis (current position)
-Previously served 5 years working in management training program at brand name rental car firm (didn't move up the ranks unfortunately as it was largely a sales position)

Extracurriculars
-Not stellar, but involved in alumni activities with undergrad institution (i.e. interviewing candidates)
-Handful of other volunteer projects and professional organization member
-Numerous activities in college

Career goal
-want to translate current work experience/knowledge into job in financial services industry with MBA such as consulting...

Any advice you guys can offer would be so appreciated!

*Kudos to 'Beat the GMAT' btw - just stumbled upon this site and have already found it incredibly helpful!*

Dear howell,

Congratulations on your score! Because of the increased competition, top tier programs are pretty much a reach for everyone. I think you should still apply to these schools, but I also think you should have some alternatives in your school list (top 15-30 range). Gaining an offer of admission will come down to how well you present your case and distinguish yourself from the competition. Outstanding essays, resume and interview are critical for success.

Best of luck,
Lisa
