Wharton's Reapplication Essays for 2011

Hi guys,
Can you give us your two cents on Wharton's new reapplicant essays for 2011? https://www.wharton.upenn.edu/mba/admiss ... edures.cfm
So far, it looks like they are the same the regular essays. Do you think they will re-read the old app and recommendations? Should we pick one of the essays, such as the Failure one, to explain what has improved in our application (by treating the lack of admission at Wharton as a failure), or just let things be and apply as if we are doing it for the first time - by answering the questions overall? Do you have any tips on these new essays for reapplicants?

Dear FutureMbaGirl -

Thanks so much for your question. As a reapplicant who got into my dream school the second time around, I enthusiastically enjoy helping those giving a school a second shot!

I cannot tell from your question when you previously applied, but based on what is stated on Wharton's website, it seems they keep previous applications on file for two years. I would assume they will re-read these; the key is showing growth from that previous stage in your career, and so I would suggest you tie your previous career essay to this updated version. It should not be a radical departure from your previous trajectory but rather show your steady progression.

Personally, I would not use the failure essay to talk about the Wharton ding. You probably have a much more interesting angle or personal tale to relate. Furthermore, notice the question asks you for your "definition of failure." So, dig a bit deeper! When have you not realize expectations at work? On a volunteer initiative? When has your leadership or communication style not been effective? Etc.
