Profile Evaluation - Doctor

by Dr.Stan » Tue Sep 11, 2012 2:44 am
Hi,

I am a 26 year old doctor.
- Indian citizen
- Graduated from the University of Mauritius in 2008

I appeared for the GMAT in July 2010 and scored a dismal 640. Prepared for a couple of months and this time, was shocked to see a 630!

However, in 2010 itself, I decided to go ahead and apply to LBS, Oxford and INSEAD but was dinged by all.

Now, my present profile is:

Have 4 years of experience as of now, which would almost be 5 years by the fall of 2013.
Work experience consists of working in a government hospital in India for 1 year, followed by working as a medical officer at a medical centre run by my family for 1.5 year

Next, I've been working as a Resident in clinical radiology at a government hospital in Mauritius since August 2011. This is basically a training post.

Why do I want an MBA?
I realised that I have an entrepreneurial mind when I jumped into book publishing and website developing businesses during high school. These businesses lasted for almost a year and had to be shut down when I went to attend medical school.
Now I want to establish a telemedicine venture that would cater to the under served population of sub saharan Africa. I wish to acquire the necessary set of skills to establish and run this venture by attending a Business School.

Apart from this, I do have a history of innovative initiatives that I took during my work experience, such as setting up a virtual consultancy facility for patients who came to consult my father from far off places, free medical camps, etc.

Acads aren't very astounding. Got 59.8% overall in my graduation. But that's one of the highest one scores at medical school anyway.

I'm contemplating on applying to the LBS this year again but I don't really think I have time to re take the GMAT.

Could you please guide me on whether it is feasible to take a shot with the details that I've mentioned above?

Thanks

Regards

Look, if you have a great plan about WHY you want to do an MBA, you can do very very well. Given the rarity of MDs who apply, and the time it takes to become a doctor you are in a unique position. PLUS having a family clinic and leading it can tie in greatly to your goals....

Your only "Tripping Point" now is your GMAT. Just study really really hard and do as well as you can (and retake four times if you need), when you hit that score of 700+, reapply with a strong application, and you should have pretty good chances.
