I think the answer is C. 'By the time they reaed adulthood' modifies men and women, use of 'had been' indicates that attacks had happened before they reached to adulthood.

by the time they reached adulthood, (men and women) had been attacked by birds.

the modifier ..clearly identifies the men and women.
They --> identifies men and women.


I was thinking of E... but the last part afer the comma..is hanging ..

If C is correct, there should be a comma before BY. IMO E

its a difficult question as the ans doesnt jump at you

but if you look at the question two events stand out

people reaching adulthood and they being attached before that

hence the second part requires a had and first part in past tense

C stand out

"By the time they reached adulthood" should have commas to seperate it from the rest of the sentence because one can write the sentence without it. This discrepency is in C and E. why C not E ?
