Is 2010 the average (arithmetic mean) score on the MTE test?

1. The highest MTE score is 2350 and the lowest score is 850.
2. Half of those who take the MTE score above 2000 and the other half score below 2000.

I'm assuming that you want to find the average (arithmetic mean) score.
To make things easier, let's say that 4 people wrote the MTE.
So, to find the average score, we must find the sum of all 4 scores.

Statement (1) tells us about 2 scores, but it tells us nothing about the 2 middle scores.
So we could have several different cases. Here are two cases:
Case a: 850, 850, 2350, 2350 (average 1600)
Case b: 850, 850, 2346, 2350 (average 1599)
INSUFF

Statement (2) doesn't provide much information. Here, we could have several different cases. Here are two cases:
Case a: 850, 850, 2350, 2350 (average 1600)
Case b: 850, 850, 2346, 2350 (average 1599)
INSUFF

(1)&(2)
We can use the same cases from (1) and (2) to show that, combined, the statements are not sufficient.
Case a: 850, 850, 2350, 2350 (average 1600)
Case b: 850, 850, 2346, 2350 (average 1599)

Answer = E
