Q49 V 34 - 690, Shall I retake the Gmat?

by sherulporwal » Tue Nov 15, 2011 11:52 am
Hi

I took the GMAT on 14th November 2011. Before the exam I was very well prepared and scored consistently in the range of 720-740 (GMAT PREP and MGMAT). After I took the GMAT I was pretty satisfied with my performance but was shocked to see my score. I was expecting and score above 720 atleast, whereas i score 690 (Q49 v34)

To give you a brief, I have 10 months experience with UBS Investment bank, and from the past 18 months I have been running a business of my own (Not related to finance or investment banking). I have decent academics and extra curricular. I have cleared 2 Level of CFA exam.

I wish to apply for MBA to 5 universities out of the top 15 university of USA and have roughly 1.5 months and I have not begun the process for application, What do u suggest is it worth taking the GMAT again (also because I have a big discrepancy in Quant and Verbal score) or shall i just focus on my application and chuck GMAT?

(I have ample of time to spend on GMAT/Application during the next 1.5 months)

Please help!!!!!!!!

A few questions for you which will help us figure this out:
Where are you from? How many people do you lead? What is your business about? Is it profitable? What are your goals? What volunteer work do you have?

I can answer you better if you give us a bit more info here. However, if you are aiming at top 15 schools ONLY, a 690 is likely a preeeetty low score.

Hi,

When aiming for top institutes abroad a score above 700 is advisable. If you can improve your GMAT score by 15-20 points you can be in a secure place GMAT wise.

Generally most of the applicants have a good 4-5 years of work experience. If we are reading this correctly you don't have work experience falling under this range. So we would advise retaking gmat and getting more experience.
Although it is not just the work experience that counts but also what you did there like-what were your achievements, what initiative you took, what changes you drove in your workplace etc. So you need to build your work profile around these areas.
Hence the quality of your work, your academics and beyond academics will play an important role in determining your candidature. So for top schools make sure you have all the aspects highlighted well to make it into your dream schools.
