admissions advice needed

by ankut » Wed Apr 14, 2010 9:28 am
Hey

I have a 740 in the GMAT, a very average GPA (from a top-10 engineering institute in India) and the following under 'extracurriculars' :

selected to represent India in the 20th International Youth leadership conference and the 5th World Youth Congress (both scheduled for later this year)

was a National-level table tennis with a lot of individual gold medals at the national level

sports captain in college

member of the debating society in college and head of the master of ceremonies team in college

(Hope you get the picture......)

I am looking for a top MSc in management programme, which is not looking too carefully at my GPA. (I intend to try for an Ivy MBA later). Also, are there any other interesting options available out there for a profile like mine? I am extremely interested in social entrepreneurship, and will be doing some good work on it this summer.

So, it's either a really broad-minded MBA program or a top Masters in management (Europe) that I am looking for applying to.

Please give me schools suggestions for my A-list, B-list and C-list.

Thanks!!!

Hello,

Some excellent European Masters in Management programs to consider are HEC, Cems, HEMS, London School of Economics, ESADE, ESCP, Mannheim Business School. There are numerous others; I suggest further research to align your list of programs with your learning needs and preferences.

This list contains both reasonable reaches and probable on-pars. They all will consider both GMAT and GPA; however, they will view your application holistically, and your high GMAT (along with a stellar application presentation overall) will partially mitigate the less than stellar GPA.

Thanks a lot for that. I'll keep that in mind. However, looking at the website, I got the impression that LSE demands extremely high GPAs whereas maybe some others in this list do not stress that TOO much on the website. Am I reading too much into stuff, or are some schools more strict with minimum GPA requirements than some others? Because my GPA could possibly be called below-average (although at a top-10 Indian engineering institute) and I want to apply to 6 or so schools and not more than that..

Hello,

Even schools that emphasize the GPA more like LSE will take a holistic view of the application. So while the GPA may have more weight at that school, it could still be counteracted by other factors, as long as it's at an acceptable range. I'm not saying it's a "likely" admit but a "reasonable reach."
