I have a low GPA ...Please help !!

by rajveer » Mon Oct 01, 2012 4:29 am
hey guys...Iam 27 years of age and I want to pursue MBA from any of the top 25 or top 50 MBA Schools in US.I completed my B.E from India and Masters in Engineering from Hong Kong.I have a GMAT Score of 720 and 4 years of full time work experience (1 year as an engineer and 3 years as a Wealth Advisor in ING Goup, Hong Kong). I have performed well in my job and have obtain various licenses and examination certificates in Hong Kong such as in Financial Markets, Asset Management, Securities and Investments ,Investment linked Insurances and corporate finance.I can speak Mandarin and cantonese and run my own company in Hong Kong with an annual turnover of 5- 10 Million USD. Although everything sounds good , but my concern is that I got only 60% during my Undergrad and 2.85 GPA out of 4.0 in my masters. I think the reason for my low percentage during undergrad was simply lack of effort whereas for my masters , it was that I tried to complete it within 1 year whereas it was an 18 month course.

Do you guys think a low GPA is itself a disqualifier or do I still have a shot at top 25 or top 50 MBA schools ? And also please advice is there anything else I can do to overcome my low GPA such as alternative transcript or something else..

Well, a low GPA doesn't disqualify you from good programs. And with a 720, I think you did a great job of proving that you are a clever fellow. And it seems like you can have a shot at Top 25 programs, and good chances at Top 50. So I wouldn't worry about it, but just make the best of what I have.

an alternative transcript can help a bit, especially in highly technical materials (and especially if you didn't do good in them before). So if you can turn an old "D" in Calculus into an "A+" that could be pretty nice.

Otherwise, if you h ave any good reasons for having a low GPA, it is something that should be addressed in the Optional Essay.
