I am upset by GMAT preparation

by sarwan » Mon Jun 07, 2010 10:11 am
Hi All,

From 2 months I was preparing for GMAT and was getting good score in Practice tests but from few days I am not feeling confident, becouse my score in the practice tests is decreasing day by day.

The reasons what I felt:

1) From 10-15 days I did not study anything about GMAT due to some issue
2) I was very confident about SC (studied 2 times Manhattan's SC) but nowadays I am not able to correct a simple SC question.
3) I don't know why sometimes I forget or confuse to apply the cause & effect, scope shift, % and # and premises shift, conclusion redirection etc about CR.
4) While reading RC I get sleepy, may be I lost my point capturing power or not able to concentrate of myself
5) Quan. takes a lot time to solve the prob. may be I am not in practice.

Now, everything whatever I studied I am finding new.
Anyone can help me please by some how to push me in GMAT ground ?

sarwan,

The reasons that you cited definitely affects one's performance in practice tests. There are some things that you need to follow if you want to improve your overall test performance,

1. Practice is the key! Always keep practicing. You don't need to spend 4-5 hrs everyday to practice. If you are stuck with your work, find atleast an hour everyday to practice. When you practice everyday, you have your content preserved in your brain.
2. Review your flashcards atleast thrice in a week. Even more than thrice does not harm you.
3. Build up stamina by constant, uninterrupted practice for atleast an hour or upto 75 mins. But DONT slog yourself by constantly sitting for 1.5-2 hrs. Make sure that you take a break (not just 5 or 10 mins. But atleast 30-60 mins!).
4. Make a habit of working out everyday like running or playing any sport. Don't ignore just for the sake of GMAT. Your mind will always be fresh.

If you follow these points, not only does your timing/pacing improves but also your concentration.

For RC, make sure that you dedicatedly read articles from sites such as Economist, scientific american, science daily etc for 30 mins everyday. Understand what the passage really talks about. Capture the tone of the author. By following this, i can guarantee that you will not get sleepy while reading passages.

Just my 2 cents! Hope this is useful.

Hi papgust,

Thanks for your reply .

All your points are helpful for me but some points will help me more, which I was not following previously i.e.
1) Reviewing the flashcards (I never used Flashcards, but I think I should start)
2) Fourth Point <<4. Make a habit of working ......>> becouse by doing some homework I found that GMAT is not a exam like "studying more and getting more score" Its matter how much we can explore our thoughts and analyzing power not only by practicing GMAT question but also by daily work.

Hi I know how you feel! I am also striving to get at least 450 gmat score.

We all here are working very hard to achieve the target score. I am sure you are confident, mature, and ready to take the test since you have spent enough time to prepare for it. You just have a plenty of butterfly flying in your tummy thats why you are so nervous...similar to when someone asked you for a date.

You can do it! I believe in the law of attraction..the book secret. It boost my confident..although my score is still below 400 but my math has increased 33% from 5%. Believe in yourself that GMAT is a piece of candy...I exaggerate it..I am also having a hard time as well but since we are struggling..we shall cheer up and motivate each other.
Warm wishes to all of you who are striving to conquer the GMAT
